Asklepios Klinik Barmbek is a shining star in the Asklepios family of hospitals. It takes its responsibility to medical travelers very seriously, and works closely with medical travel facilitators as partners in care that together provide the very best outcomes for their international patients.
International patients and medical tourists
The new clinic opened since 2005 is one of the most advanced hospitals in Europe. State-of-the-art treatments are offered to approximately 80,000 patients from Germany and abroad. With 19 departments, approximately 620 beds and over 1,600 members of staff, the team is dedicated to ensuring every patient receives the best all-round care.
Asklepios Klinik Barmbek provides full-range assistance if patients are interested in undergoing treatments at the hospital. In order to keep all guests fully prepared and give the best possible advice, the team requires detailed and up-to-date medical documentation. The documents can be either in English or German. Each patient’s case is determined individually and the hospital’s specialists will provide specific treatment plans after all the documentation is reviewed and plans are discussed in person with every patient.
The hospital will provide an over all cost estimate before each patient’s stay, which is to be paid in advance if the patient will undergo treatment. This will include cost estimates for the medical procedure, duration of treatment as well as accommodation for the patient and the accompanying person.
Asklepios Klinik Barmbek is a hospital focusing on specialised care and offers a variety of conservative and surgical services. The hospital performs over 36,000 inpatient and approximately 74,000 outpatient treatments annually. At the same time, the clinic focuses on treatments for emergency and complex diseases, especially in the area of visceral medicine and oncology. Asklepios also has a specialised lung centre and a supra-regional stroke unit for the first-line treatment of stroke patients.
If patients have a need for further care during their stay in the clinic, the Social Services team will be of assistance for all matters. The team prepares for hospital discharge with the patient and focus on the individually prepared medical, nursing and social after-care.
For example; Advice is provided on the following topics:
- Organising outpatient care or admission to a care home
- Follow-up medical treatment (rehabilitation)
- Selecting resources and finding / organising a home help

To help organize all stays and visits in the clinic, the hospital can put patients in touch with one of their cooperation partners. The partners are there to offer advice and support in arranging travel, handling visa issues, locating hotel accommodation for people traveling with the patient, coordinating all treatment appointments and also have interpreters familiar with medical procedures on hand.
General and Visceral Surgery, Surgical Oncology
The department has a specialist and well-qualified team of experienced surgeons to care for patients in all areas relating to diseases of the abdominal region and the gastrointestinal tract.
